Emily of The Planetary Society posted a beautiful video showing what it would look like if the Earth had rings like Saturn. Absolutely beautiful!
bill zeman’s rockets are amazing. Beautiful woodworking, beautiful design.
(Hat tip to Cory Doctorow for pointing me to Bill and his daughter’s “Tiny Art Director” blog, which is also awesome.)
So, this is a really cool idea, that somehow is lacking in execution. Why aren’t all the sans-serifs on one side and the serifs on the other? What does Swift have to do with Memphis? I do like that there’s a bunch of scripts in place of the Lanthanides, but the rest isn’t making sense to me…

Thanks to typophile for the typeface link, and google for the periodic table.
I’ve been trying to help a friend find a “quirky, yet affordable” place to hold her wedding, so I’ve been looking at offbeat places around Massachusetts. Some of these would be terrible wedding venues, but I needed to share them.

Mary’s Little Lamb Schoolhouse
Apparently, Mary’s lamb really did follow her to school, in Sterling,MA. Then Henry Ford moved the schoolhouse to Sudbury.
The Boston Athenaeum I had known that the Athenaeum was the the oldest Library in America, and required membership. I hadn’t known that it’s available for functions and that members are invited to tea on alternate Wednesdays.

Astronomy Picture of the Day has a four-minute movie today. It’s an incredibly beautiful sequence of time-lapse pictures of the sky, the sun, clouds, the moon, stars, planets, and satellites.

In honor of the 400th anniversary of the invention of the telescope, and the 40th anniversary of our first landing on an alien world, 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. Start your celebration inside by watching the video, and then go out and look at the sky!
When I got into work this morning for my one-day work week, Firefox opened the tabs I had open before Christmas. One of them was the Recollections website, with period clothing from a number of different eras.
There are lots of beautiful things, but I’ve been thinking about dresses I could wear to work,
and this one is lovely:

I can’t quite convince myself it would look fantastic on me, though. Too bad things like this are rare enough that there aren’t places to try on different styles.
This is the coolest thing I’ve seen all day. I want a metric ruler to wear on my wrist! It’s the perfect complement to the stainless steel “Brass” rat. Sadly, they are currently out of stock (and they’re also $40) or I’d be giving them as Christmas (or your winter-holiday-of-choice) presents to all my hardware-hacking and sewing friends.

Wordsplosion! had a link to Hoefler & Frere-Jones’ blog entry about grawlix, which was right next to an entry about the cool typefaces used on pencils. Here’s another one from http://www.brandnamepencils.com/ :

Somehow, my current writing implements just aren’t as beautiful to look at. I wish I worked in a fashion that made pencil a reasonable alternative. I even do my crosswords in pen.
On the other hand, though, I do have a lovely new pen—a Pilot Extra Fine RazorPoint in purple to match my new iPod.
